Introducing the Screener Management Window

We have created a new Screener Management window that allows you to control all things screener-related from one place.

The Screener Management window is now where you create and modify screeners. You can also run screeners from the Screener Management window and view the results in the Table.

Additional capabilities in the Screener Management window include charting screener results, which is accomplished via a new single click button. We’ve also made it easier to “Score” a portfolio, watchlist or the current contents of the table to see how stocks in your portfolio, watchlist or an ad hoc ticker list perform against the full set of filters from any screener.

The Screener Management Window

The new Screener Management window is accessed by clicking on Screeners in the grey selector menu as shown below.

The Screener Management window contains multiple panes. The Screeners pane (upper left) shows the current list of screeners.

The Screener Links pane (lower left) contains a structured list of quick links for various screener functions, including running screeners, managing screeners, and getting help.

The Screener – “Screener name” pane on the right is loaded with the screening criteria of the selected screener.

You can also run the screener and perform functions such as charting the screener or running the screener against a selected portfolio or watchlist to see which tickers pass and fail and why. The top set of highlighted buttons are where these functions are performed, as shown in the screenshot below.

Selecting any of these buttons will navigate away from the Screener Management window and switch to the Table or Chart Layout. To navigate back to the Screener Management window, simply use the back button of your browser or click on Screeners in the grey selector menu on the left.

Creating a Screener

Selecting “Create a New Screener” under Screener Links is one of several different ways to launch the “Create Screener” pane.

You can screen based on well over 500 screenable metrics, which cover price performance, financial and operational metrics, as well as sector and industry metrics.

• ‘Add Criteria’ – Screen based on simple thresholds (e.g. Market Cap > 20 billion).
• ‘Add Free From Equations’ – Perform advanced screening based on custom equations.
• Rank the passing stocks in the screener according to the weightings that you provide.

Modifying a Screener

To modify the screener’s criteria, simply select the desired Screener from the Screeners pane.

You then select the metric to change from the right-hand pane and click on the edit icon. You also can also expand the criteria further by selecting ‘Add Criteria’ and ‘Add Freeform Equation’.

When you have finished updating the screener, click ‘Save’.

The Passing Stocks Preview panel shows a preview of tickers that passed the screener. Note that as you edit the criteria you will dynamically see how many stocks pass the screener at the bottom.

You can also test multiple tickers of your choosing against the screener by entering tickers into “Test Tickers”. The tickers you choose to test will be bolded in the preview window. If the ticker doesn’t pass the screener, its score will be less than 100%. You can determine why the tickers didn’t pass by mousing over the score, as shown in the dark rectangle below.

If you are running an ETF screener, then the ticker list you can test will be from the ETF universe.

Running a Screener

The Screener Management window provides shortcuts to both the Table and the Chart.

When running a screener you can output results to the Table which provides a flexible spreadsheet for viewing tickers and screener data. In the Table you can sort any of the displayed columns, you can color-code tickers, and you can group stocks based on industry, sector, tag, or color. By adding a column filter you can also choose to limit the stocks shown to only those that match the specified criteria.

Run in Table (Screener Filters)

Stock Rover shows the results of the screener in a view called ‘Screener Filters’ which automatically includes each screener filter as a column.

This is a powerful feature that lets you see and manipulate the results of a screener in the table with the screener criteria as columns. You can also copy and rename the Screener Filters view for later reference directly from the Table layout.

Run in Table (Current View)

Clicking on ‘Run in Table (Current View)’ outputs the screener results to the Table, using the most recently accessed View within the Table. The ‘Run in Table’ button is dynamic (Current View) will change to reflect the name of the most recently accessed view. Below is the result of clicking on ‘Run in Table (Returns vs. S&P 500)’.

Chart

Clicking on Chart switches to the chart layout.

Stock Rover charts the screener as if it were a portfolio with an equal dollar weighting for each holding. Additionally, via internal rebalancing, the equal weighting is maintained each day of the period that the screener is charted. Below we see a screener’s performance charted against the S&P 500 benchmark over a 1-year period.

Filter Table (Current Table)

Clicking on ‘Filter Table’ filters the most recently loaded table using the screener criteria. The ‘Filter Table’ button is dynamic and will change to reflect what was most recently loaded into the Table. This enables you to apply filters from a screener to any defined population of stocks and ETFs, such as a portfolio, watchlist, or a sector, industry or an ad hoc ticker list. Below is the result of clicking on ‘Filter Table (My Watchlist)’. The results of the screener filter appear in the Table and the filters appear in the white bar below the views bar and above the table. The number of active filters is displayed at the top of the page in the blue bar.

Note that Freeform Equations are not applied as screener filter criteria.

Score Table (Current Table)

Clicking on ‘Score Table’ scores the most recently loaded table using the screener criteria. The ‘Score Table’ button is dynamic and will change to reflect what was most recently loaded into the Table. This enables you to score any table populated with a portfolio, watchlist, sector, industry or an ad hoc ticker list.

To “Score” the Table means you can see how tickers in your Table perform against the full set of filters from any screener. Below is the result of clicking on ‘Score Table (My Watchlist)’ where each of the tickers in the Table is scored against the 7 filter criteria of the Ranked Value Screener with Momentum. A score of 100% 7/7 means the ticker met all filtering criteria.

Hovering over the Score value opens a tooltip listing a breakdown of exactly how the stock fared against all of the filters in the screener. The tooltip lists the screener’s filter criteria, how the stock did in each category, and whether it results in a pass or fail of that particular filter.

Scoring a Portfolio or Watchlist

To “Score” a portfolio or watchlist means you can see how tickers in your portfolio or watchlist perform against the full set of filters from any screener. For example, you could use a value-oriented screener to help determine whether or not your holdings are good values, or you could use a growth screener to see which of your picks are growth stocks — and to what degree.

The example below is showing how each of the tickers is scoring against the 7 filter criteria of the Ranked Value Screener with Momentum. A score of 100% 7/7 means the ticker met all filtering criteria.

From here you can take advantage of the many screeners that come with Stock Rover or create your own and quickly narrow down a population of thousands of stocks to a more selective set of investment opportunities that meets even the most stringent of investment criteria.

In addition, you can compare screener results across many dimensions of financial, operational and price performance. You can chart the screener and even leverage the screener to see how tickers in your portfolio or watchlist perform against a full set of screener filters.
