Announcing Stock Rover V10

Introduction

I am pleased to announce Stock Rover V10. The new release will be available on Wednesday, July 12th. You will receive this release automatically when you log into Stock Rover on or after July 12th.

So what is in V10?

The short answer is lots of good stuff. We have added a number of new features and capabilities to Stock Rover. And although the product is more powerful, we have worked hard to make the product easier and more intuitive to use.

Key Features

Below is a the list of the new key features and changes to Stock Rover. In subsequent sections of this blog post I will touch upon each new item. The key features and changes in V10 are:

  • Easier and more intuitive navigation
  • Start menu improvements
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Improved quotes handling
  • A cool new component called the Trade Evaluator
  • A powerful new type of view called Tiles
  • More comprehensive views
  • ETF and Mutual Fund improvements
  • A new Technicals section in the Insight Panel
  • Accounting for interest on Money Market funds

Easier Navigation

Let’s start with how Navigation in Stock Rover has changed/improved in V10.

The four layouts that Stock Rover provides: Table, Chart, Insight Panel, and All have been moved from the Start Menu to the top of the Navigation Panel as shown in the screenshot below.

Updated Layout Selection

Selecting a layout affects the data display on the items selected from the Navigation Panel, so this change makes logical sense.

Start Menu Improvements

The Start Menu has been improved/reorganized. The new Start Menu now looks like this:

New Start Menu

In the new Start Menu the My Collections section has been simplified. The first three entries show you your Portfolios, Watchlists and Screeners in the Navigation Tree.

Now, when you select an individual Portfolio, Watchlist or Screener, you are shown the contents of the item in whatever Layout you have selected; Table, Chart, Insight Panel or All. In the prior version of Stock Rover, you would be put in a management screen where you could change the item. Since displaying is much more common than changing, that is now the default action. The screenshot below illustrates these changes.

New Navigation Layout

There is also a new category called World, that puts your Portfolios, Watchlists and Screeners together in the same navigation tree along with your ad-hoc quotes, the indices, sectors, ETFs and commodities.

New Navigation Layout - World

Finally, moving layouts out of the Start Menu makes it smaller. This in turn allows us to list out the Portfolio Tools explicitly in the Start Menu vs. the current technique of having them hidden in a sub-menu.

There are also additional navigation changes that are fully detailed in our help pages.

We think you will find the new navigation simpler, more intuitive and faster.

Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs are a new feature in V10 to help with Navigation. They are on by default, but they can be turned off in account preferences if you don’t want to use them. The screenshot below shows the new Breadcrumb feature.

Breadcrumb Navigation

Breadcrumbs are especially helpful when you want to navigate quickly through Stock Rover and have collapsed either the Start Menu and/or Navigation Panel. The Breadcrumb displays what you have selected.

Breadcrumbs also display a back arrow on the left that makes it easy to go back to the previous screen you were on.

Finally, the Breadcrumb trail provides a pull-down menu for each step in the trail, making it easy to quickly select different items for display or navigation within Stock Rover as shown in the screenshot below.

Quotes

Quotes is a powerful feature in Stock Rover, allowing for easy ad-hoc ticker entry as well as easy comparison of any tickers to existing data sets such as a portfolio or the Dow 30. However, many first time users found the implementation of the feature confusing.

Quote handling in Stock Rover V10 has been dramatically simplified. Everything feels much more natural. Quotes can now be accessed in two different locations, next to the Enter Ticker box, and when World is selected in the Start Menu as shown below.

Quotes Redesign

One nice change with the new quotes feature is when you enter a quote, and then no longer need it, you can remove it directly from the table via clicking on the “x” next to the ticker.

The screenshot below included Applied Materials (AMAT), which was added as quote to the Dow 30 data set for comparison purposes. You can see it is not a natural member of the data set because it is bolded. Clicking the “x”, highlighted in the screenshot below, will remove it.

Removing Quotes

Additional details of the Quotes changes can be found in our help pages.

The Trade Evaluator

The Trade Evaluator is a brand new facility in Stock Rover that we are very excited about. We think you are going to find it to be an incredibly useful tool to help you become a better investor.

So what is it exactly?

Well, have you ever wondered how your trades have performed? Were the trades a stroke of genius? Or would I have I just been better off, not doing anything? Or perhaps doing an alternate set of trades?

The Trade Evaluator will analyze your trades and tell you in detail, whether your trades added or subtracted from your performance, incorporating both the trade itself and dividends gained or lost. Trades are measured both on an absolute basis and can also be measured against a selected benchmark.

You can see how your trading decisions affected your portfolio’s performance and how beneficial or detrimental your trades were to your investment returns.

Trade Evaluator can evaluate individual trades, a bundle of trades made together, all the trades for a specific ticker, as well as all the trades that comprise a single portfolio or group of portfolios.

We have provided the trades performed in two sample portfolios, Large Cap Growth and Large Cap Value in the Trade Evaluator so you can see the Trade Evaluator in action.

Below are snapshots from The Trade Evaluator for the Large Cap Growth portfolio. Because the Trade Evaluator display is wide due to the number of columns it provides, for the purposes of this blog, the table is shown in two parts.

We strongly recommend that you check out the Trade Evaluator and explore what it can do. We are hoping that once you get familiar with it, you will wonder how you lived without it.

The Trade Evaluator is available to all subscribers with a Premium or a Premium Plus plan. Additional details on the Trade Evaluator can be found in our help pages.

Tiles

Tiles is another major feature addition to Stock Rover V10. Tiles is a new type of view. A Tile View displays both tabular and graphical data together. This view type is available with the Premium Plus plan.

Below is a sample screenshot taken from the Scores Tile View using the sample Large Cap Value portfolio as the data source.

Tiles

Tiles views are remarkably flexible. We ship several tile views out of the box, but you can create and customize Tiles to create a wide variety of views to see and compare data in new ways.

Additional details on Tiles can be found in our help pages.

More Comprehensive Views

View management has been greatly improved in Stock Rover. We now provide over 50 out of the box Views that showcase the plethora of financial, operational, performance and technical metrics that are built into Stock Rover. They are logically organized into folders by investment category, as shown in the screenshot below:

View Folders

An Individual View Folder will contain the set of Views appropriate to the category. For example, the Views appropriate to the Analysts folder are shown below.

Analysts Views

To change the View Folder, you click on Views, which will present a dropdown menu, from which you can select another folder and View as shown in the screenshot below.

View Folder Selection

One new capability in Stock Rover is the ability to show or hide the View Tabs. In the earlier version of Stock Rover all Views showed across the top, which necessitated scrolling. In V10 we only show the Views from the selected folder, as shown in the screenshot below. It’s definitely neater and cleaner.

View Tabs On

V10 also has the ability to hide the tabs altogether, which is the cleanest look of all, as shown in the screenshot below.

View Tabs Off

To see the Views within a View Folder, simply click on the View Folder name as shown below:

View Tabs Off Menu

To hide the View tabs in Stock Rover, you go to your Account Preferences in the upper right hand corner of the Stock Rover window and select Preferences as shown below.

Account Preferences

Then you check or uncheck the “Show tabs for each table view” item to enable or disable tab display.

ETF and Mutual Fund Improvements

New ETF and Fund Metrics

We added 23 new ETF and mutual fund metrics. These are available with our Premium Plus plan. You can click here for the list of metrics.

New ETF and Fund Views

We have greatly enhanced the out of the box Views provided for ETFs and Funds to take advantage of the new ETF and fund statistics in Stock Rover. The screenshot below shows all the ETF and Fund Views available, with the ETF and Fund Profile View as the selected view.

ETF and Fund Views

Insight Panel Improvements

In the Insight Panel, we have added a Top Funds sections for equities, so you can see which fund holds the most shares of a given stock. For example, for Microsoft (MSFT), the new Top Funds section looks like this.

Microsoft Top Funds

If you click on a fund, for example, if we click on the top fund holder of Microsoft, STSEX, we will transition to their Insight Panel display which will contain the following reciprocal section:

STSEX Top Holdings

New Insight Technicals Panel

In Stock Rover 10, we have also added a new Technicals section to the Insight Panel that works for all tickers (stocks, ETFs and funds). A sample screenshot for the Fidelity Magellan Fund (FMAGX) is shown below.

Money Market Fund Interest

Lastly, a new feature added to V10 is the ability to consider money market interest in the Portfolio Future Income facility. Back in the day, money markets paid effectively zero interest, so accounting for this in future dividend income was of little benefit. However now, money market interest can be considerable, and accounting for it in future income is important.

We don’t track the interest rate and payment schedule of money market funds since we don’t have a data feed that contains that information. However, you can tell the Future Income facility, what your interest rate is and what day of the month interest is paid and Future Income will incorporate this information in the Future Income displays.

As an example, I added $250,000 of cash to the sample Large Cap Value portfolio. Then in the Future Income facility, I set the interest rate on money market funds to 4.75% to be paid on the 15th of the month. The Future Income screenshot below displays this information, along with the money market dividend income integrated into the Future Income stream.

Future Income Interest

Summary

Stock Rover V10 is a major release. There are a number of significant changes and new features added to the product. We expect that existing Stock Rover users will go through a bit of adjustment getting familiar with the new changes. However, we think the ease of navigation and the new features will prove to be well worth the time invested to gain mastery with the new release.

As always, if you have questions or comments on the V10 release (or anything else for that matter), don’t hesitate to reach out to our support department at support@stockrover.com.

Amazing upgrades. I look forward to trying them out in two days.

Thank you Daniel. Please let us know how you like the new release.

Jim E says:

This looks great. The Tile view and new way of navigating Views appear especially useful. Looking forward to exploring – I am sure it will take a little time to discover the full potential but well worth the effort.

Howard Reisman says:

Thank you Jim. We think that once you get familiar with the changes and additions, you will be very happy with the release.

Tod Westcott says:

Stock Rover continues to outdo itself, adding value on top of value. Awesome upgrades to an already awesome product.

Howard Reisman says:

Thank you Tod. We really appreciate the feedback.

Stephen Bennett says:

Really well thought out. Glad to see you’re focusing on the user experience as well as functionality.

Howard Reisman says:

Thank you Stephen. User experience will be a continued focus for the product. It is very important to us that the product is efficient and as easy to use as possible, given its breadth and level of features.

Norbert says:

Love the new features!

Will the new update include showing the return earned on the money market funds in the portfolio? As of now, if you put $1000 into a portfolio where it earns 5% in a year, the return after a year should be 5%, but the charts/portfolio currently shows 0% return.

It would be nice to have that feature, especially now, since 5% back on idle money can be substantial versus it being shown as 0%…

Alison Murphy says:

Hi Norbert,

Thank you for the kind words.

The new feature is included as part of the Future Income tool where you can set the interest rate and the monthly payment date.

Portfolio Performance and tracking in V10.0 is the same as in the previous release.

Regards,
Alison

Shad Kearns says:

Could you please add a lowest price by year metric? That has ability to find the low price for the past calendar years

For Example
“Lowest Price [Y1]”
“Lowest Price [Y2]”
“Lowest Price [Y3]”

Which it would return the lowest price that the stock hit in 2022, 2021,2020

Howard Reisman says:

Thank you for your request. It has been added to the development queue for consideration.

Stewart H says:

I don’t suppose you increased the number of fields in a view?

Howard Reisman says:

I believe the limit is 35. It has not changed from the prior release. The number of Views you can maintain however has been increased dramatically.

yogibearbull says:

Several good improvements on look and feel.

Auto-updating of distributions would be a great help for those who use manual SR features only. I just won’t link my brokerage accounts to ANY portfolio management/analytics sites, including the SR – no offense intended. A short-gap may be to offer clickable distribution updates.

SR portfolio volatility and beta remain inadequate as weighted averages of components. I think that SR can do a better job on these.

May be in the next revision(s).

Howard Reisman says:

Thank you for your feedback. Your requests have been added to the development queue for consideration.

Andrew G says:

How do I add and remove positions from a Portfolio? I used to see a transactions tab where I could add/ remove positions.

Alison Murphy says:

Accessing the transactions or positions tab is now available from Modify Portfolio.

Select Portfolios in the Start Menu on the left.

Then select your Portfolio in the Navigation Panel and then select Modify this Portfolio under the Portfolio Actions panel or right-click on the Portfolio and select Modify Portfolio.

Here you will see the Allocations, Positions, and Transactions tab.

JimE says:

Having used it for a few days – Very intuitive and very powerful. I am finding it has simplifies and improves some of my routines. Exceeds expectation.

I am fascinated by the tiles feature as it should improve the capabilities of looking at 2 or 3 side by side. The “Tiles” example above shows 2 columns each with a table and a chart – eg 2 columns for BEN and 2 for BG in the example. I might be missing something but can’t see how to do this. Any clues?

Howard Reisman says:

Thank your for your feedback Jim, it is appreciated by everyone on the Stock Rover team.

To see Tiles, you will need to have upgraded to the new views. The views that end in the word Tiles utilize the new Tiles feature. You can read more about it here:

https://www.stockrover.com/help/new-v10/new-tile-view/

The support team will contact you tomorrow to ensure you are able to see and utilize this new feature.

Ken Leoni says:

Jim,

To see the tiles side by side, you’ll want to collapse the Start Menu and Navigation Panel by clicking on the triangles at the top of the Start Menu and Navigation Panel. This will expose enough screen real estate so that you can see the tiles side by side. Also make sure you display the chart in “small format”.. which can be configured along the top of the Tile View.

Regards
Ken

Ed says:

You should have a video going over all these features. A blog is not enough.

Howard Reisman says:

It’s coming. Stay tuned.
